Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is planning an all-electric version of its redesigned Sprinter commercial van.

The third-generation conventional model, powered by diesel and gasoline engine options, will go on sale in Europe this summer and in the U.S. by year-end. The electric variant will be introduced next year in Europe, but it isn’t clear if the vehicle will be offered in the U.S. or other markets.

The eSprinter will share its battery and electric motor with the upcoming eVito midsize van. The electric motor will drive the front axle, powered by a battery stowed under the cargo floor to maximize interior space.

Performance specifications haven’t been announced, but Mercedes says the battery will be able to be fully recharged in as little as 30 minutes. Fleet managers will be able to remotely monitor energy and schedule overnight charging.

Including the electric powertrain, some 1,700 configurations of the new Sprinter will be available worldwide. These will include a panel van, chassis cab, stand-alone tractor and pickup body variants.

Maximum cargo capacity is listed at 600 cu-ft and 12,000 lbs. The interior will feature Mercedes' new MBUX user interface, which is launching this spring in the A-Class small car. Other goodies include a 360°-view parking camera, moisture-activated windshield wipers and a self-cleaning rearview camera.

Mercedes will make the conventionally powered van for international markets in Germany. North American variants will be built at the company’s new facility in Charleston, S.C., which will begin production in the second half of 2018.​​​​​​
