Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit says it will introduce 10 new electric cars and crossover vehicles by 2022, three years earlier than originally planned.
The accelerated timeline was announced today ahead of Daimler’s annual meeting in Germany.
The rollout is expected to begin in 2019 with a production version of the Generation EQ concept Mercedes unveiled at the Paris auto show last September. The concept model is powered by a pair of electric motors and a 70-kWh lithium-ion battery, which deliver an estimated range of 310 miles on the European driving cycle.
Daimler says it will invest €10 billion ($10.8 billion) in coming years to bring the new EVs to market. The company also plans to expand its hybrid-electric offerings from its current eight-model lineup to an unspecified number in the future. This will include several plug-in hybrids, starting with the S-Class sedan.
Daimler has been challenged on the use of the EQ brand in China by Chery Automobile Co., which already sells a two-door EV there called the eQ.
