Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is adding a host of advanced driver assistance systems to its 2019 C-Class midsize sedan along with a minor facelift and power upgrade.
Much of the new technology is adopted from the larger E- and S-Class sedans. This includes adaptive cruise control with GPS capabilities that automatically slows the vehicle if an upcoming curve or roundabout is detected.
The C-Class also adds blind-spot assist, active lane assist, emergency brake assist and an evasive steering assist system that adds torque to the steering during emergency steering maneuvers. An optional vehicle-to-everything communication system can provide emergency warnings and help find parking spots.
Semi-autonomous driving is enabled by improved camera and radar systems. Mercedes says the forward camera can now see as far as 500 meters (1,600 ft) ahead (including 300 meters in 3D). The radar scans 250 meters in front, 80 meters behind and 40 meters on each side.
The car’s exterior changes are highlighted by updated chrome bumpers, standard LED lights and a new diamond-pattern grille insert for AMG Line models.
Inside, the new C-Class retains the basic design of the outgoing model while offering upgraded displays and functions. Options include a new 12.3-inch high-definition digital instrument display, a revised multi-function steering wheel with touch-control pads, a 10.25-inch infotainment display and a touchpad controller within a reworked center console. Smartphone integration is standard.
In Europe, three diesel and three gasoline 4-cylinder engines will be available. Mild- and plug-in hybrid models for both diesel and gasoline powertrains also are said to be in the works.
The U.S. lineup features a new turbocharged 2.0-liter mill that makes 255 hp, up 6% over the outgoing engine. Torque is unchanged at 241 hp. A 9-speed automatic transmission is standard.
Mercedes will publicly unveil the 2019 C-Class next month at the Geneva auto show. Sales are due to start worldwide later this year.
