Mercedes-Benz to Add v2x Telematics This Year
Daimler AG predicts its Mercedes-Benz unit will become the first carmaker to introduce vehicle-to-vehicle/infrastructure technology for production vehicles when it introduces Drive Kit Plus by year-end.
Daimler AG predicts its Mercedes-Benz unit will become the first carmaker to introduce vehicle-to-vehicle/infrastructure technology for production vehicles when it introduces Drive Kit Plus by year-end.
The company plans to offer the v2x telematics system as kit that can be retrofitted to all its current models. It isn't clear how broadly the service, which requires the user to have a smartphone containing the company's Digital DriveStyle app, will be available.
Daimler says it is working on a fully integrated version of the system for future models.
The two-way communication system enables similarly equipped vehicles to automatically warn each other of nearby traffic hazards and to receive traffic updates from regional services. Motorists also can manually alert other equipped cars about dangers ahead, such as poor weather conditions or a wrong-way driver.
