Daimler AG's Mercedes-AMG performance unit is acquiring a 25% stake in Italian high-performance motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta SpA that includes collaboration on sales and marketing.

Mercedes-AMG will help MV Agusta expand globally and increase sales while gaining what it describes as "the perfect two-wheel partner." The latter company aims to double sales within three years.

MV Agusta is known for its high-tech, high-design superbikes powered by 3- and 4-cylinder engines displacing between 675 cc and 1.1 liters. The 69-year-old company is based in Varese in northern Italy.

Daimler's connection with the high-performance two-wheeler market is not unusual among German carmakers. Volkswagen's Audi unit acquired Bologna-based Ducati motorcycles last year and BMW has made its own high-end bikes for decades.
