Mazda Partners on 12-Volt Lithium-ion Starter Batteries

Mazda Motor Corp. is partnering with two Tokyo-based companies—ELIIY Power and Ube Industries—to develop compact lithium-ion batteries used to start piston engines.
The partners expect to commercialize their 12-volt system, which they say is far lighter and more durable than conventional lead-acid batteries, by 2021.
Eliiy Power already makes lithium-ion starter batteries for motorcycles. The 12-year-old startup also markets batteries for use as residential electricity storage devices. Ube Industries Ltd. is a chemicals company that makes battery separators and electrolytes.
Mazda says it will contribute computer-aided model-based development techniques to model chemical reactions within the batteries and create battery management systems.
