Magneti Marelli SpA has agreed to buy SmartMeUp, a French start-up that specializes in “perception software” for autonomous vehicles and smart cities.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter, weren’t disclosed.

SmartMeUp develops software for processing sensor signals, detecting, identifying and tracking nearby objects, and creating 3D maps of the surrounding area. The software requires low computing power and generates low heat, which the developer says will make it possible to launch on a large scale for embedded automotive applications.

SmartMeUp also is developing software for driver monitoring technology.

The acquisition is Magneti Marelli’s latest venture into autonomous driving technology, following an investment in lidar specialist LeddarTech. The unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV also is developing a “smart corner” system that enables sensors to be integrated into a vehicle’s headlights and taillights.

FCA is in the process of divesting Magneti Marelli. The carmaker aims to complete the separation by early 2019.
