Magna International Inc. has won a contract to make painted carbon fiber exterior body panels for two undisclosed 2016 model-year vehicles.
The company collaborated with carbon fiber supplier Zoltek Corp. in St. Louis, Mo., to develop a process to make class-A carbon fiber body panels and produce them at competitive cost and speed. The process will use Zoltek's Panex 35 carbon fibers and CFS-Z sheet-molding compound.
Magna did not indicate the volume or type of panels its Magna Exteriors operating unit will make, or even divulge where production will occur. But the company is displaying samples of the production parts this week at the JEC Europe Composites Show in Paris.
