Magna International Inc. says it will use Innoviz Technologies Ltd.’s solid-state lidar sensor technology as part of its autonomous vehicle sensor package. The partners will demonstrate the technology next month at CES in Las Vegas.
Lidar (light detection and ranging) is considered a key enabling technology for fully autonomous vehicles. Magna already supplies camera, ultrasonic and radar sensors, which can be teamed with lidar to provide a complete picture of a vehicle's surroundings.
Innoviz, a one-year-old startup based in Israel, says its solid-state system features a unique hardware architecture and innovative software that can be easily adapted into any vehicle. The company estimates the cost of the system will be about $100, which would be significantly less than current lidar sensors used in prototype self-driving vehicles.
Several other companies also are developing low-cost solid-state lidar systems. Earlier this month Velodyne Lidar Inc. announced plans for a $50 device.
