Canadian mega-supplier Magna International Inc. has joined a consortium launched last year by BMW, Intel and Mobileye to commercialize a top-level autonomous driving system controller by 2021.
The group was formed to create a flexible platform to control self-driving vehicles that can be easily adopted by multiple carmakers. The scalable platform can be used to manage various levels of automation from level 3 (conditional automation) to level 5 (complete automation).
Magna says it will apply its expertise in system integration to help speed the development work. The company joins three other recent additions to the coalition: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Delphi and Continental.
