Ride-hailing service Lyft Inc. is the latest among 45 companies to be granted a permit to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in California.
Lyft said in September it aims to offer self-driving vehicles as a ride option in the San Francisco area. The company also is setting up a research and development center in Palo Alto to pursue so-called Level 5 autonomous systems.
In September, Lyft and Ford Motor Co. announced a partnership to develop robotic cars, put them into service and manage their use through a platform that orchestrates everything from dispatching the vehicles to cleaning and maintaining them.
Lyft president and co-founded John Zimmer has predicted that more that half the cars providing its services will be robotic by 2020.
