Hinduja Tech Ltd. is engineering a modular 1-liter engine architecture that the Renault-Nissan Alliance will use for cars made in India, The Economic Times reports. The alliance declines to comment.
The engine design borrows some elements from an existing Renault-Nissan engine platform, according to the newspaper. The architecture will enable the alliance to make diesel and gasoline variants on the same line and use 40%-50% common parts.
It isn't clear when the new powerplant family will go into production or how Renault-Nissan will use it. ET says the project marks the first time an Indian engineering firm has been put in charge of developing an engine for a foreign-based carmaker.
Hinduja Tech changed its name from Defiance Technologies Ltd. last autumn. Nissan Motor Co. acquired a 38% stake in the company, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland Ltd., last November. Hinduja Tech and Ashok Leyland are units of Mumbai-based Hinduja Group.
