India’s transport and highways minister says his department has helped finalized a plan to ban the sale of piston-powered vehicles by 2030.
Minister Nitin Gadkari says the measure to switch to 100% electric power for all new vehicles will go to the cabinet in a few weeks for approval, The Economic Times reports. The New Delhi-based newspaper says the plan includes a an unspecified program to develop an EV charging network in India to support the shift.
The country’s auto industry has backed the government’s effort to clarify its policy. At the same time, carmakers worry that future sales volumes could suffer because the cost of batteries currently make EVs more expensive that comparable piston cars.
But Gadkari notes that lithium-ion battery prices are dropping, and he says the government won’t extend its 2030 deadline. One senior official tells ET that the deadline could be shortened.
