Seven 2013-2014 cars have won the top "superior" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new test of the effectiveness of automatic braking and forward collision avoidance technologies.
IIHS tested 74 models with the optional safety equipment by driving each one toward a stationary barrier to check its response. A "superior" rating means a vehicle traveling at 12 mph automatically stops before hitting the barrier. And at 25 mph, the vehicle reduces impact speed by at least 11 mph and may stop the car completely before impact.
The top-rated vehicles include the Cadillac ATS sedan and SRX SUV, Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan, Subaru Legacy sedan and Outback wagon, and Volvo S60 sedan and XC60 crossover.
Six vehicles garnered an "advanced" rating for successfully avoiding a crash or reducing impact speed by 5-7 mph. They include the Acura MDX SUV, Audi A4 sedan and Q5 crossover, Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, Lexus ES sedan and the Mazda6 sedan.
IIHS gave another 25 models its "basic" rating for systems that simply warn the driver of an impending front collision.
