Hyundai Motor Co. and its Kia Motors affiliate are recalling a combined 524,900 vehicles in the U.S. with faulty brake light switch systems.
The twin recalls involve 390,500 of Hyundai’s 2013-2014 model Elantra compact sedans, coupes and GTs; and 134,400 of Kia’s 2012-2014 model Forte compact sedans. Affected cars have a brake pedal stopper that can deteriorate and allow the brake lights to remain on continuously.
If the condition occurs, following drivers can’t immediately determine whether the affected car is slowing. The defect also enables a vehicle to be shifted out of Park without depressing the brake pedal. Both conditions increase the risk of a crash.
Hyundai-Kia says the recalls will begin by the end of January.
