Hyundai Motor Corp. says it prefers the superior fuel economy and shifting characteristics of dual-clutch transmissions over continuously variable transmissions.
Mike O'Brien, who heads the company's product planning in North America, tells Automotive News that dual-clutch gearboxes are "more engaging for the enthusiast driver" and thus a better match for Hyundai's product philosophy.
Dual-clutch transmissions provide automatic shifting but also give the driver the ability to make manual-like gear shifts without using a clutch. The company currently offers a dual-clutch transmission only on its Veloster sport coupe.
