A U.S. House of Representatives panel will hold a hearing on June 2 that attempts to clarify why Takata airbag inflator recalls have dragged on for years with no clear resolution.

Fred Upton (R-Mich.) promises the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee he heads will grill Takata, carmakers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration alike. "It's past time for Takata, NHTSA and the manufacturers to explain to drivers what went wrong and how and when they can fix it," Upton declares.

But concrete answers aren't likely to emerge next week. Takata and carmakers continue to probe the underlying reason for the inflator failures.

Experts agree the replacement inflators are safer. But until the root cause of the original defect is completely understood, no one knows whether the replacement inflators may eventually need to be replaced too. Investigators hope to have an answer several months from now.
