Honda Motor Co. will exhibit a lower, lighter version of its Uni-Cub electric scooter a the Tokyo auto show at the end of November.
The little unicycle-like mobility unit is the third iteration of technology Honda first introduced as the U3-X mobility device in 2009. A rider directs the Uni-Cub simply by leaning in the intended direction of travel.
The Uni-Cub uses balance control technology and an omni-directional drive wheel system borrowed from Honda's work with Asimo, its humanoid robot. The company has been testing the latest iteration since June 2012 in a program conducted jointly with Japan's National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.
The latest Uni-Cub features weighs only 55 lbs and has a lower seating position than the 2012 model. A lithium-ion battery gives the scooter a maximum range of 3 miles and a top speed of 3 mph. It can operate for about 90 minutes at an average speed of 2 mph.
