Honda Motor Co. plans to invest about 17.2 billion baht ($577 million) to erect a new assembly plant in Thailand to begin building compact and subcompact cars in 2015.

Honda says the facility in Prachinburi Province about 75 miles east of Bangkok will have annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles. The company expects to hire 1,200 permanent employees at the factory.

Honda has said Thailand will remain its manufacturing hub for southeast Asia despite massive flooding in 2011 that severely damaged its Ayutthaya plant there and disrupted the company's Asian production for months.

Honda expanded the annual capacity of the Ayutthaya facility by 40,000 units last month to 280,000 vehicles. The factory makes the Civic compact sedan and City and Brio subcompacts for emerging markets. The company sold a record 171,200 vehicles in Thailand last year.

Honda says it will spend an unspecified additional amount to boost output capability in Ayutthaya to 300,000 units per year in 2014. When the new Prachinburi plant opens, the company will have annual capacity of 420,000 vehicles in Thailand.
