Honda Motor Co. and Chinese internet commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. have agreed to co-develop services for connected cars, The Nikkei reports.

One initial product will enable Honda customers to use Alibaba’s AutoNavi maps and Alipay online retail platform to find shops, parking and service stations and pay for goods and services there.

The partnership comes as carmakers and information technology companies are scrambling to tap the multi-trillion-dollar potential of services delivered to future vehicles that wirelessly link to their surroundings. Such products will combine wireless technologies and easy-to-use payment platforms with artificial intelligence that matches the services to individual tastes.
