Harley-Davidson Inc. netted $172 million in January-March 2012 compared with $119 million in the same period of last year. Revenue climbed 20% year over year to $1.3 billion.
The company's retail motorcycle sales rose 20% to 59,700 units worldwide, propelled by an American sales jump of 26% to 39,800 units. Analysts are encouraged that one-third of Harley sales in the U.S. and two-thirds in Europe and the Middle East were to buyers new to the brand.
The Milwaukee, Wis.-based company hiked its guidance for full-year global shipments to dealers by 5,000 units to a range of 245,000-250,000 motorcycles. Harley says its 2012 volume will be restricted by its limited ability to boost output because of upgrades to its plant in York, Pa., later this year.
