General Motors Co. will offer debit cards worth as much as $1,500 to customers who bought SUV/crossover vehicles with inflated fuel economy ratings. Affected owners can opt instead for an extended vehicle warranty.
The program will apply to 135,000 retail customers who bought or leased a 2016 model Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse or GMC Acadia crossover vehicle. A source tells Bloomberg News that GM will pay out about $100 million.
The SUVs were mislabeled with ratings 1-2 mpg higher than they should have been. GM blames a reporting mix-up tied to recalculated fuel economy figures for this year's models.
The value of each card will depend on the fuel economy discrepancy and, in the case of leases, the term and annual mileage limit. GM says most cards will be worth between $450 and $900. The warranty option will extend the 36-month/36,000-mile factory coverage by 12 months and 24,000 miles.
