Car-share service Uber Technologies Inc. has agreed to test a program with General Motors Co. that will enable Uber drivers to lease GM vehicles by the week.
The 90-day pilot will launch in San Francisco as part of Uber’s own Vehicle Solutions program. It will be coordinated on GM’s end by the carmaker’s own 10-month-old Maven personal mobility service, which provides cars for ridesharing drivers.
GM says the Uber test will enable drivers to lease a new Chevrolet Cruze or Malibu sedan or Trax mini-crossover, including insurance, for $179 per week, plus taxes and other fees. Participating drivers may use the vehicle for personal needs in addition to transporting Uber customers.
GM has launched a similar program called Express Drive for drivers affiliated with Uber rival Lyft Inc. GM invested $500 million in Lyft at the beginning of the year.
