On Friday General Motors Co. will introduce an unlimited wi-fi data plan for $20 per month for vehicles in the U.S. that are equipped with the company's OnStar 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot.
GM describes the cost of the prepaid plan as the industry’s lowest. Service will be provided through AT&T and available on compatible Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models.
OnStar and AT&T currently offer monthly plans of $10 for 1 gigabyte of data, $20 for 4 gigabytes and $40 for 10 gigabytes, or $5 for 250 megabytes per day and $150 for 20 gigabytes used over 12 months.
GM says it has sold more than 3.1 million Chevys since mid-2014 that are equipped with OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspots. Last year such owners tripled their combined use of the feature to more than 4 million gigabytes of data—the equivalent to streaming 17.5 million hours of video.
In 2015, former CEO Dan Akerson predicted such connections could be worth $350 million in GM profits by 2018.
