General Motors Co. says it will suspend production at its assembly plant in St. Petersburg, Russia, for four weeks this summer two weeks longer than the usual holiday break because of slow demand in that market.
GM sales in Russia fell 8% to 99,100 vehicles in the first five months of this year compared with an industrywide decline of 4%. The St. Petersburg factory's output includes the Chevrolet Cruze and Opel Astra small cars.
Earlier this week the Moscow-based Assn. of European Businesses cut its forecast for Russia's 2013 auto sales by 150,000 units to 2.80 million vehicles. Carmakers sold 2.94 million vehicles there in 2012.
