The new 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel General Motors Co. plans to launch in its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck will be built at the company’s Flint, Mich., engine plant, Automotive News reports.
Production of the engine will start in late 2018 or early 2019, according to the report. Dan Nicholson, who heads GM’s Global Propulsion Systems business, confirmed the engine will be produced in Flint but didn’t provide any details.
In late 2015, GM announced plans to spend $263 million on a new engine program in Flint. At the time, the company said the investment would help retain more than 400 hourly and salaried jobs at the facility.
The new 3.0-liter diesel, which was developed by GM’s operations in Turin, Italy, will be mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission in the Silverado. The 2019-model pickup also will offer a pair of gasoline V-8 engines (5.3- and 6.2-liters).
GM unveiled the new Silverado this week at the Detroit auto show.
