General Motors Co. says it will spend $600 million over the next two years to upgrade and expand its Fairfax assembly plant, in Kansas City, Kan.
The plant will continue to make the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse midsize sedans during the renovation. GM hints it may add a third model there after the upgrades are completed.
The factory, which assembled 283,000 vehicles last year, will get a new 450,000 sq.-ft. paint shop that occupies 20% less floorspace than the current operation. The Fairfax plant's stamping facility will install a press used to make structural reinforcements for body frames that GM says will reduce waste and improve quality.
GM says the upgrades, which also include new tooling, robots and environmental enhancements, should cut the plant's energy use per vehicle by 50%.
