General Motors Co. has hired Mary Chan to the newly created job of vice president for globally connected consumers to oversee and integrate its OnStar and infotainment units, effective May 1.

Chan was recruited from Dell Inc., where she was senior vice president and general manager of enterprise mobility solutions and services. In her new job, Chan will report to Vice Chairman Steve Girsky. Chief Infotainment Officer Phil Abram and acting OnStar President Terry Inch will report to Chan.

GM says it wants to coordinate all in-vehicle connectivity services. Chan also is charged with expanding OnStar's safety and navigation telematics services, which are built into new GM models.

Infotainment systems are being introduced by the company's brands: MyLink at Chevrolet, IntelliLink at Buick and GMC and the upcoming Cadillac User Experience. Those systems mainly allow drivers to connect their own devices via Bluetooth or USB connection for phone, mail, Web browsing and music.
