General Motors Co. and Japan's Isuzu Motors Ltd. are spending a combined $60 million to upgrade their DMAX Ltd. diesel engine venture in Moraine, Ohio.

DMAX, which is 60% owned by GM, has produced about 1.6 million diesels for heavy-duty pickup trucks since it began operations in 2000.

The company makes the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel used in GM's Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra trucks and Chevy Express/GMC Savana large vans.

GM says the investment is for design changes to meet future emission standards. Observers speculate that DMAX also will build the new 2.8-liter diesel GM plans to introduce for its new Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon midsize pickups in 2016.
