General Motors Co. says the speedy 4G LTE connectivity it will roll out through its OnStar unit beginning next month will cost between $5 (20 MB of data) and $50 (5 GB) per month.
The new service, which is being launched in partnership with AT&T, will debut in the 2015 model Chevrolet Malibu. GM will expand the capability to 33 other Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC models by the end of this year.
The system operates through a special antenna, creating an in-car wi-fi hotspot that can support as many as seven cell phones, laptop computers and tablets simultaneously. The hotspot is functional whenever the car's ignition is on.
AT&T estimates the base 200 MB package can provide 6.5 hours of music, 13 hours of Internet connectivity or 10,000 text e-mails per month.
