Worldwide demand for light vehicles rose 2% to a record 95.31 million units in 2017, according to LMC Automotive.
The market research firm notes that a 4% sales increase to 20.42 million car and light trucks in Europe last year more than offset a 2% decline to 17.21 million vehicles in the U.S. (chart). Deliveries in China advanced 2% to 28.59 million units.
Sales also gained in 2017 in Japan (+5% to 5.12 million vehicles) and Brazil/Argentina (+14% to 3.04 million). Volume declined 2% to 1.75 million units in South Korea.
LMC reports that global sales have risen by two-thirds since 2000 and 36% in the past 10 years in spite of a major decline during the 2008-2009 economic crisis.
