New-car registrations in Germany, Europe's largest car market, fell to 3.08 million vehicles in 2012 from 3.17 million the previous year, according to VDA. The industry group attributes the slump to consumer "insecurity" caused by the eurozone debt crisis.
Germany's auto market has been more resilient than most others in the region this year. But in December demand tumbled 16% year over year to 204,300 units.
The VDA predicts German car sales will sink to about 3 million units in 2013.
