Germany’s environment ministry is recommending the country adopt carbon dioxide mission limits that are far more stringent than those proposed by the European Commission, Reuters reports.
Using 2021 as a baseline, the EC proposes to cut CO2 emissions from cars and light trucks 15% by 2025 and 25% by 2030. The German ministry’s position paper urges targets of 25% and 50%, respectively.
The ministry contends that the more demanding CO2 reductions are critical to meet air quality goals and accelerate the German auto industry’s shift from piston power to electrified powertrains.
