A German fish distributor has filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen AG for misrepresenting diesel-powered vehicles it leased as being environmentally friendly, Bild am Sonntag reports.
Deutsche See is suing VW for malicious deception, seeking €12 million ($12.8 million) in compensation after failing to reach an out-of-court settlement. Reuters describes the complaint as the first diesel scandal-related lawsuit brought in Germany by a major VW customer.
Deutsche See claims in a statement that it leased 500 vehicles from VW specifically because the carmaker touted its diesels as being “the most environmentally friendly, sustainable mobility concept.” Reuters says the distributor had won an environmental sustainability prize seven years ago.
VW so far has agreed to pay more than €2- billion ($21.4 billion)—most of it in the U.S.—for illegally rigging 11 million diesels worldwide to evade government emission limits.
