Investigators in France have turned over to prosecutors the results of their probe into high emission levels from some diesel engines sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
The investigation reported last summer that real-world emissions of nitrogen oxides from FCA’s diesel-powered Fiat 500X mini-crossover (pictured) were 17 times above lawful limits. NOx emissions from the company’s Jeep Cherokee SUV were eight times the amount allowed. FCA insists its vehicles meet test standards.
Those standards include exceptions that allow diesel makers to ease or suspend emission control under certain conditions to protect the engine. Critics says several manufacturers have exploited the loophole unfairly. French prosecutors also are reviewing complaints about certain Renault and Volkswagen diesels.
In December the European Commission threatened legal action against as many as seven EU members that fail to enforce the region’s emission standards.
