Ford Motor Co. says the driving range of its Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid sedan has been extended 60 miles to a class-leading 610 miles for the 2017 model year.
Ford credits the improvement to changes to the car’s hybrid software and regenerative braking technology, enhanced aerodynamics and more efficient engine oil. Ford says the 2017 Fusion Energi, which currently is being launched, has an estimated Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy rating of 42 mpg.
The plug-in sedan can travel as far as 21 miles on electric power alone. It will then operate for about one mile on a combination of battery power and its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine fueled by a 14-gallon gasoline tank, which provides an additional 588 miles of range, according to the carmaker.
Ford says Fusion Energi owners drive their vehicles an average of 13,500 miles per year with half the total coming in all-electric mode. Ford has sold nearly 30,000 of the plug-in Fusions since launching the vehicle in 2013.
The 2017 Fusion Energi plug-in starts at $31,100. It is one of six electrified vehicles Ford offers in the U.S.
