Ford Motor Co. says it will add a plug-in hybrid car and all-electric SUV/crossover vehicle in China as it strives to electrify 70% of the Ford-brand model lines it sells there within eight years.
The plug-in Mondeo Energi sedan, which offers a longer range in electric-only mode than conventional hybrids, will debut next year. Ford introduced the latter type of hybrid Mondeo in China last November. The company also offers a plug-in version of its C-Max MPV for fleet operators.
The Mondeo hybrid will be the first locally produced plug-in model made by the carmaker’s Changan Ford joint venture. Ford says all models produced by the partnership will include at least one electrified powertrain option.
The small electric crossover model will arrive in about five years. Ford is targeting a range of 450 km (280 miles) per charge for the vehicle.
The company also vows to begin building electric powertrains in China by 2020. Ford says it will support the initiative with an unspecified expansion in capabilities at its research center in Nanjing.
