Ford Motor Co. has filed applications in the U.S. and Europe to trademark the name “Mustang Mach-E.”
The name is expected to be used for a hybrid-electric version of the Mustang that Ford plans to introduce in 2022. Ford applied to trademark “Mach-E” in December, but only recently added Mustang to the applications.
Ford had considered using “Mach 1” for the Mustang-inspired electric crossover vehicle it plans to launch next year.
But the carmaker backed off following criticism from enthusiasts, who were upset about repurposing the legendary Mach 1 name for an electric SUV. The name previously has been reserved for high-performance Mustangs, starting with a classic 1969 model.
