The Transit-based vans use chassis supplied from Turkey by the carmaker’s Ford Otosan venture. The EVs are equipped in Germany with an electric powertrain and body developed in partnership with StreetScooter GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post AG.
Ford and Deutsche Post began to collaborate last year to create the van, called the StreetScooter Work XL.The van offers 20 cubic meters of load volume and a payload of nearly 1,300 kg (2,800 lbs).
Most of Ford’s initial annual production of 3,500 Work XL vans will go to Deutsche Post’s DHL package delivery service. The company says the vehicles also will be marketed to other customers.
Ford will offer the vans with an array of electric powertrains that deliver as much as 90-kw (122 hp). An assortment of lithium-ion battery options provide as much as 76 kilowatt-hours of energy storage and deliver an operating range of 200 km (124 miles) per charge.
