Ford Edge Gets Smart on All-Wheel Drive

Ford Motor Co. is launching a new all-wheel-drive system that uses artificial intelligence on the 2019 Edge crossover vehicle.

Ford Motor Co. is launching a new all-wheel-drive system that uses artificial intelligence on the 2019 Edge crossover vehicle.

Available on the Edge ST variant, the system uses “fuzzy logic” to process data from dozens of sensors within 10 milliseconds to determine if awd should be enabled.
 
Inputs include antilock brakes, ambient temperature, traction control, trailer connection, vehicle speed and windshield wiper usage.
 
Torque can be directed entirely to the front or rear axle as needed. Ford says the awd disconnect technology helps improve the Edge ST’s Environmental Protection Agency’s fuel economy rating to 21 mpg with a 2.7-liter V-6 engine.
 
Other fuel-saving technologies for the new Edge include automatic engine stop-start, active grille shutters, exhaust gas recirculation and a warm-up system for the vehicle’s 8-speed automatic transmission.
