Ford Motor Co. expects its $25,200 C-Max hybrid mini-crossover to earn a U.S. fuel economy rating of 47 mpg, thus surpassing the rival Toyota Prius v hybrid crossover by 3 mpg.
The hybrid-only C-Max, which will be assembled in Wayne, Mich., is 14.5 feet long, six feet wide and 5.3 feet tall. It weighs 3,700 lbs or 4,000 lbs as the C-Max Energi plug-in, which has a larger battery for longer range in electric-only mode. Both models have two-row seating for five.
The two variants each will be powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine that makes 141 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. The front-drive powertrain is assisted by a lithium-ion battery and electric motor that boosts total system output to 188 hp. Ford's "powersplit" system enables the electric motor to contribute propulsion power at higher speeds than a typical hybrid system.
The company expects the C-Max Energi plug-in to surpass the 87 mpg-equivalent rating for the plug-in version of the Prius sedan.
Ford says standard features will include seven airbags, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, an active park assist system and a power rear liftgate that can be opened by wiggling a foot under the rear bumper.
