Ford, Daimler to Close Fuel Cell Venture

Ford Motor Co. and Daimler AG tell Reuters they plan to shut down their 10-year-old Canadian fuel cell venture this summer.
The companies formed the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Corp. (AFCC) in Burnaby, British Columbia, in 2008. Ford says it will move its fuel cell development work in-house. Reuters notes that Daimler signaled earlier this year that its near-term focus has shifted from fuel cells to battery-based electric systems.
The venture also has been working with German fuel cell systems developer NuCellSys GmbH and Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cells production unit, which is collocated with AFCC.
Ford tells Reuters that both companies will continue to explore ways to cooperate on developing fuel cell stack modules.
