Ford Motor Co. is offering a diesel option for the first time on its best-selling F-150 fullsize pickup truck.
Ford says the 3.0-liter V-6 will deliver best-in-class towing capacity of 11,400 lbs and a U.S. fuel economy rating of 30 mpg on the highway. The engine makes 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. Its power is delivered through a specially calibrated version of the 10-speed automatic transmission that debuted in the F-150 last year.
Dealers are taking orders for the option now. Deliveries will begin this spring. The diesel will be available to fleet buyers in SuperCab and SuperCrew models at all trim levels. Retail customers will be able to order the engine only in conjunction with one of the truck’s three high-end packages.
Ford predicts the new diesel, a variant of a powerplant Ford supplies to Jaguar Land Rover Ltd., will capture about 5% of F-150 retail sales.
