The owners of bankrupt Fisker Automotive Inc. plan to relaunch the brand as Elux in mid-2016, sources tell Reuters.
China's Wanxiang Group acquired Fisker's assets last March. The company initially said it would debut an updated version of the original company's $100,000 hybrid Karma sport sedan this year, followed by the Surf wagon variant in 2016 and the lower-cost Atlantic sedan in 2017.
All three models were to be made in Finland by contract manufacturer Valmet Automotive, the Karma's original assembler. Reuter's sources say Wanxiang now plans to find another site to resume production of the revamped Elux Karma. The fate of the Surf and Atlantic models isn't clear.
The reengineered Karma is likely to be priced at about $135,000, according to Reuters. The news service's sources say Wanxiang Group is updating the car's aging powertrain. The original model used batteries made by Waltham, Mass.-based A123 Systems Inc., a company now owned by Wanxiang.
