California-based Fisker Automotive Inc. claims it will open a new tech center for electric car development probably in southeastern Michigan next spring. The company expects to announce the location and staffing levels early next year.
The company, which has offered no details about the planned facility, says the center would be used to finalize work on the Atlantic extended-range electric sedan it had expected to be in production by now.
Fisker is attempting to line up enough financing to start making the $50,000-$60,000 Atlantic at a former General Motors Co. factory in Delaware. Plans to launch production there earlier this year were shelved when the U.S. Dept. of Energy froze payment of a $529 million loan.
Fisker operated a tech center in Pontiac, Mich., for two years when it was developing its first EV, the Karma. The company closed that facility in 2010.
