Honda Motor Co. has presold the first model of its all-new Acura NSX hybrid supercar for $1.2 million at auction in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The winning bid, which is almost eight times higher than the $156,000 base price for the NSX, came from Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick. Proceeds will go to two children’s charities: the Paediatric Brain Tumour Foundation and Camp Southern Ground.

The price is the highest charity sale of a VIN #001 manufacturer car in the 45-year history of the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event.

Hendrick, a renowned collector of first-edition cars and owner of an Acura dealership, will add the NSX to his museum collection in Charlotte, N.C. He’ll get to choose the car’s interior and exterior colors as well as various options and trim levels.

Full production of the NSX is to begin this spring. The long-awaited model, which was unveiled in concept form in 2012, teams a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine and a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission with three electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The combination generates 573 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.
