Kia Motors Corp. is recalling 71,700 of its 2008-2009 model Sportage crossover vehicles in the U.S. to check an electronic brake controller that could short circuit and cause a fire.
The problem can occur when controllers have poorly sealed covers, according to the company. In those cases, salty water may enter, corroding a wiring connector and causing a short circuit.
Kia will begin notifying affected owners next week. Dealers will inspect the controller and replace it if corrosion is present. If not, they will replace the device’s cover.
In the meantime, Kia advises owners of the targeted models to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures in case of what the company euphemistically describes as a “thermal event.”
