Fiat’s Mirafiori Factory Will Build SUVs

CEO Sergio Marchionne confirms that Fiat SpA will produce new Alfa Romeo and Maserati SUVs at its Mirafiori assembly plant in Turin, Italy.
The company has said previously that it won't close the flagship factory as its union feared. Fiat had planned to built Fiat and Jeep small crossover vehicles in Mirafiori but disclosed in December it would instead make those models at its facility in Melfi, Italy.
Marchionne did not identify the new models for Mirafiori. But Automotive News Europe predicts one will be the Maserati Levante, which is scheduled to debut next year. Alfa's SUV is slated for 2015, according to the online newspaper.
Marchionne says the Mirafiori plant will eventually produce two Maserati models for export to the U.S. He notes that it makes sense for Fiat to export only pricey, high-profit models because shipping a vehicle across the Atlantic adds about €1,000 to its cost.
Separately, Marchionne says the company will probably make a longer variant of the Panda city car, dubbed Panda X. He did not specify when or where that model would be built.
