Fiat SpA has won the acceptance of its union to idle half of its assembly plant in Melfi, Italy, for as long as 23 months while the company revamps the facility to make small crossover vehicles.
Work on one of Melfi's two lines will halt on Feb. 11 and could remain suspended through 2014. But Fiat told the unions it hopes to resume production by late 2013 or early 2014. The second line will continue to build the Punto subcompact.
Fiat agreed in December to invest €1 billion at the factory to produce the Fiat 500X and a new B-segment Jeep that will replace the Compass and Patriot crossovers. The latter will be sold in Asia, Europe and North America.
