FIA Announces EV Race Schedule for 2014

The FIA, the Paris-based motorsport governing body, plans an eight-event debut next year for its E Championship series for single-seat electric race cars.
The provisional roster includes street races in North America (Los Angeles and Miami), Europe (London and Rome), Asia (Beijing and Putrajaya, Malaysia) and South America (Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro).
Commercial rights to the series belong to Hong Kong-based Formula E Holdings Ltd. The consortium hopes to field a first-year grid of 10 teams and 20 drivers.
McLaren Group agreed in November to design the powertrain and control system for the cars. Famed Italian race car maker Dallara Automobil SpA will build the chassis, which are based on a prototype developed by French EV racing firm Formulec.
The 1,700-lb cars can reach 100 kph in three seconds and run about 25 minutes per charge. Each race will be run in three parts, with the drivers switching to new cars in the second stint and back to their recharged original cars for the final segment.
